For a long time, Korea's scientific community has refrained from engaging with the creationists in fear that it could boost the credibility of the group. However, silence is no any longer an option.
The STR has been fighting to get information about evolution from textbooks including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. But this is merely one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the change in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based on fact that living organisms adapt to their environments, which can cause variations in genes or even whole genomes. These changes can, over generations lead to the emergence of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is called natural selection, which explains the process that allows individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more frequently than those with disadvantages. Over time, this differential reproduction can lead to the development of entirely new species.
The word "evolution" comes from the Latin word for unrolling or revealing, but the concept itself has had many different meanings since it took form in the fields of science and elsewhere. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species evolved into new species in a planned manner. Many religious people have come up with a way of reconciling evolution with their convictions. Some Christians for instance, believe that God created everything through evolution and that humans have a common ancestry to other animals.
It is essential that science educators stand up for teaching evolution. Unfortunately, in some countries around the world, anti-evolution sentiment is growing. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit teaching of evolution. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is pushing for textbooks that cover the evolutionary history of horses and their ancestral avian species Archaeopteryx.
Although these are alarming developments, it is important to keep in mind that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a broad range of sources, including fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. The reason for this is various reasons. Certain scientists study evolution in order to make practical discoveries, such as developing medications or developing new medicines, while others are driven by a desire to improve animal and plant species, generally to benefit humans. Some are simply curious, and others have a profound faith in God and want to know how the universe functions.
What is Creationism?
Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken seriously. Many creationists are Christians, but not all. Creationists generally fall into one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).
The most popular type of creationist is known as the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is literal, and that the universe and life on Earth was created only recently.

Both kinds of creationism deny the scientific theories that natural selection and biogenesis can explain how life began on Earth. Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and call their view "theistic evolution." These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species similar to the original.
Others believe that God created the universe and all living things in a single event, known as the Great Flood. They believe that the first species were all created at the same time and that they grew slowly afterward. They deny the notion of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating life can't come from non-living matter.
In general, the creationists are opposed to the teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional associations, like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education endorse this view as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists, however, are more flexible and permit both creationism and evolution to be included in their curriculum.
What exactly is Creationism in Korea?
When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. Publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they will remove references to evolution in their textbooks. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. The STR has scored its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, the Archeopteryx. The focus is now on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution as well.
STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and individuals. Its mission, it states is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints an image of students as being negative. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of trainees in biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe evolution. The root causes are unclear however, they could be related to religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists in the country.
The KACR has achieved a lot through its seminars and lectures in the past. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences that has a creationist viewpoint, which sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor, together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.
On August 7 and 8 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. 에볼루션 무료체험 from abroad, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to a crowd of more than a thousand.
